Just four days prior to my 20th birthday, one of the worst attacks occurred in U.S. history. Now I am 22 years of age and that day seems like just yesterday.

It was on a Tuesday, as I recall and I was off of work that day and enjoying my morning of sleeping in. I awoke around 9:30 or so, not real sure and walked into the living room, where the tv was on CNN. As my eyes focused, the only thing I remember seeing was footage of an airplane drawing closer to one of the WTC towers, then it struck! I couldn't believe it!! I thought I was watching footage from a movie--but nothing like this entered my mind. When the realization came to me I still didn't know what I was watching, I was in disbelief. My first reaction was, "Oh, my gosh, why are they flying so low, they are going to hit the building!" Then it occurred to me that what I was watching had been previously taped and it had happened about 30 or so minutes prior. In my mind, "You mean this happened while I was asleep?" Then more footage presumed and the second tower was struck and then of course the rest falls into place; the collapse of both towers. I was in awe!! My mom and dad were outside at the time and walked in as I was just standing in the middle of the room, in a daze, looking at the TV. I asked them, "What happened? When did this happen?"

After all the events unfolded on the news and the disturbing pictures were etched in my mind, the day that would never be forgotten drew to an end and I sat in front of the television almost the entire day. That evening, I remember a newswoman interviewing the families of one's who were in the towers and I felt so helpless. I even wrote down the comments, etc. from onlookers, families and the president just to view later. I continued watching the news for days on end after 9/11 and still found it difficult to comprehend what had happened.

To this very day, I catch myself thinking back to that and even though I was fortunate enough to have not been a part of it in general, but nevertheless I was a part of the reality. I may not of felt the pain they were feeling, but I felt the pain of others like me.

Here are the comments, etc. that I documented that day:

President Bush: "We will hunt down the faceless cowards and seek justice for the people."
"The tragic events of today were terrorist attacks."
"It is suspected to be the work of Osama Bib Laden."

A young man: "Please (holding a picture) if you have seen my father, he was working as a janitor on tower one, and dad if you are out there, we want you back home."

A young woman who worked in office in Tower one: "I looked up and people at the top floor were just hanging out the windows...then they just jumped out....my god...they just jumped out. I can't believe it!"

Comment from another young man: "I can't believe they would just jump out, (almost in tears) but I guess since they couldn't be saved, they were going to decide their own fate, and that was to either burn or jump."

Here are some other minor things that I documented that day as well:

  • The WTC towers had 110 stories and 21,800 windows
  • NYC has 170 hospitals
  • The first bombing of the WTC was February 26, 1993
